Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, K. 581, was written in 1789 for the clarinetist Anton Stadler. A clarinet quintet is a work for one clarinet and a string quartet. It was Mozart’s only completed clarinet quintet, and is one of the earliest and best-known works written especially for the instrument. It remains exceptionally popular today due to its lyrical melodies, with the second movement the best known.
At the conclusion of the 2008-2009 Season, New York Philharmonic Principal Clarinet Stanley Drucker celebrated 60 years as a member of the Orchestra, and he became an honorary member of the Philharmonic Society of New York, the first orchestral musician so honored.
The Philharmonic estimates that he has performed in 10,200 concerts, which is approximately 70% of the total number of their concerts since 1842. He has been Principal Clarinetist for a record 48 years, making close to 200 appearances as soloist and chamber musician with the orchestra. He played under nine Music Directors, among them Bruno Walter, Dmitri Mitropolous, Leonard Bernstein,
Pierre Boulez and Zubin Mehta. He has performed in 60 countries on tour.
Mr. Drucker maintains an active solo career, appearing with ensembles throughout the world. He has been nominated twice for Grammy Awards in the category of Best Instrumental Soloist/Classical with Orchestra.

New Yorkers traditionally celebrate the holidays with song, and The Washington Square Association offers two chances to sing yuletide carols in downtown’s historic park. The Association also provides the annual 45-foot Christmas tree under the Arch that will be lit for the season between the hours of 4 pm and 1 am. Washington Square Park Arch is located at the foot of Fifth Avenue, one block south of Eighth Street. Public information number is: 212-252-3621.
On Tuesday, December 7 at 6 pm, song leader Mary Hurlbut, accompanied by the Rob Susman Brass Quartet and children and grown-ups alike will sing holiday songs. The multi-colored lights on the resplendent tree will be turned on to mark the beginning of festive winter evenings. Santa Claus himself has promised to appear and lead the children in the illumination countdown. The Washington Square Association provides complimentary songbooks.
Christmas Eve, Friday, December 24 at 5 pm is the traditional time to celebrate the holiday with carols at the Washington Square Arch. The Rob Susman Brass Quartet, song leader and the revelers from all over the city will lustily sing out the familiar tunes. The words are in the songbooks distributed compliments of the Washington Square Association, but many will know them by heart. “Peace on Earth, Good Will to Men” will ring out to remind us all of the true meaning of the holidays.
The Washington Square Association, Inc. founded in 1906, is one of the city’s oldest community organizations. For 84 years, it has sponsored carol singing under the arch. Other activities concern the continued improvement of Washington Square, the Washington Square Music Festival, and the fostering of neighborhood spirit.

Move-In Day Parking Relief for Community Members
Sunday, August 29, 2010
NYU’s freshman class will begin arriving early on the morning of Sunday, August 29, and will be moving into freshman residence halls all day. We are sensitive to the effect this has on parking and traffic in the neighborhood, and, for your convenience, NYU would like to offer parking reimbursement to residents in the area designated by the darker-shaded section of the map above–from 14th Street down to Houston Street, between Sixth Avenue (Avenue of the Americas) and Second Avenue–to help alleviate potential difficulties. If you put your car in a garage Saturday night or Sunday, we will pay for the cost of a stay of up to 24 hours.
Please bring your original parking receipt and proof of residency to 25 West Fourth Street, 5th Floor, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., for reimbursement. For your convenience, you may also mail the original receipt and a copy of your proof of residency to NYU’s Office of Government and Community Affairs at the address below. Please keep a copy of the receipt for your records.
